After having his eyes removed at the age of two as the result of retinal cancer, Ben Underwood learned to use echolocation as a way of managing his world. By the age of five he was clicking his tongue and using the soundwaves which bounced back to sense objects around him.
Echolocation – or seeing with vibrations – is the way that bats navigate the world. Ben was a real life “Batman” who managed to help many blind people across the globe by teaching them his strategy before he passed away in 2009. His incredible ability also earned him notoriety – Ben and his ability was even showcased on 20/20.
