Hyang is a spiritual entity with supernatural power that only moves in straight lines, hence why they only go in straight lines while walking the corpses.
The festival began more than a century ago in the village of Baruppu. According to Torajan belief, a hunter named Pong Rumasek was hunting in the mountains.
He came upon a corpse that was abandoned and decaying under a tree. Rumasek set about dressing the corpse in his own clothes and giving him a proper burial.
Rumasek believed that because of his act of kindness, the spirit of the corpse blessed him with good fortune.
