The Toraja adopted this practise and they believe that the spirits of the dead will also give them good fortune for taking care of them and treating them with respect.
This funeral ritual is one of the biggest and most expensive for the Toraja communities and many Torajans save money their entire lives to they can have a proper funeral.
A lot of the Toraja are now Christian or Muslim, but there is a faction that practises ‘The way of the Ancestors’ or ‘Aluk Todolo.’
The Toraja people also place a very high importance on funeral rites. Sometimes a person will not be buried for years so that the family can save up money to give them a proper funeral.
