It’s incredible enough, what medical science can do with prosthesis for human beings, but it is also really cool that they are applying their skills to animals as well. Even though the efforts they extend may seem pointless to some, I am sure these animals are grateful for the help they have been given in their own way. Here are six animal prosthetics that will knock your socks off.
1. Stumpy the Red Kangaroo
Residing at the Ohio sanctuary of the International Kangaroo Society, Stumpy has only one leg, a real inconvenience for any kangaroo. But veterinarians from Ohio State University, including Dr. David Anderson and licensed prosthetic othotist Richard Nitsch, created a prosthetic leg for the animal, complete with a spring so as to help the animal’s movement in jumping remain as natural as possible.
2. Tonka the Turtle
Are friend Tonka the turtle is also missing a leg, but she simply didn’t need it to be as versatile as Stumpy. To keep this gal moving at a turtle’s pace employees of the Peninsula Humane Society in the Bay Area hooked him up with a set of toy wheels which provide Tonka the mobility she is looking for. After being featured in an area newspaper the turtle was adopted to a forever home almost immediately.
